FAQ

What’s the objective of the Buddy program?

What’s the objective of the Buddy program?

Its goal is to connect German and International students and to promote the intercultural exchange between students. We want you to feel good and comfortable in Mainz/Bingen from the very beginning and make it your second home. And we want your German Buddy to become also familiar with your culture and language.

What do I get out of participating in the Buddy program?

What do I get out of participating in the Buddy program?

The program helps you to establish contact with “real German” students from Mainz or Bingen, to experience the German (student) life and to improve your German language skills.

With a German Buddy you will be in good company right from the start and get the chance to make one or more new, German friends.

As a Buddy you can also join our regular events and workshops (such as intercultural and application training, etc.)

How will I meet my German Buddy?

How will I meet my German Buddy?

Just like you, the German student fills in the online application form. With those details we will try to find the best match for you. Age, hobbies and fields of study help us to find the right person.

Once we have found someone for you, you will get an e-mail with all further information and the contact details of your Buddy. Then you can directly contact him/her – ideally before your arrival in Germany.

Are there certain program plans?

Are there certain program plans?

The program is based on voluntariness. You and your Buddy decide on what you want to do and how much time you spend together.

In addition, the Studierendenwerk Mainz organizes events, excursions and workshops that you can join with your Buddy and meet other German and International Buddys.

What happens if we don't get along?

What happens if we don't get along?

If you don’t get along with each other or if you have other difficulties, please contact the program coordinator Kathrin Menningen.  She  will help you solve the problem and find a new Buddy, if you want to.

Please also contact her if you don’t have time anymore for the program or if you have further questions, suggestions or ideas concerning the program.

My German is not very good. Can I participate in the program?

My German is not very good. Can I participate in the program?

That’s no problem at all. The German Buddys speak at least some English and are happy to get the chance to improve their knowledge of foreign languages. Maybe you can even set up a language tandem!?

What else do I need to know?

What else do I need to know?

For Germans it is really important that you actually show up to an appointment you made. If you have a good reason not to come, please tell your Buddy ahead of time. Always be on time! In Germany it’s considered to be rude to come half an hour late.

Please answer the mails you get from your Buddy. If you don't have time just tell him in a short mail.

"The Buddy program" is kept alive through the participation of both parts – International and German – Buddy. It is not the duty of your German Buddy to be your personal entertainer. Please make propositions of your own as well, invite your Buddy to your home or whatever comes to your mind.
