Reusable in the canteen

Your box

What you need to keep in mind:

  • You are responsible for ensuring that your box is clean and the material is suitable for use.
  • By taking food away, you assume responsibility for the shelf life and quality of the paid meals.
  • We prepare the food for immediate consumption, even if you buy it for take-away.
  • Transferring food from dishes to box is necessary in these cases:
    • Food that is weighed (e.g. salad from the salad bar, desser from the dessertbuffet)
    • Paying at self-service checkouts
--> First weigh and pay, then transfer to your brought box. There's no other way to do it.

Procedure in the cafeteria:Grab a tray and go to the serving station of your choice.

  • Place your clean, open box on the tray.
  • Our staff will visually inspect your container. If the above requirements are not met, they reserve the right not to fill the box.
  • Once filled by us, you'll get your box back on the tray.
  • After paying, you can then close your box with the lid.

My box - What types of reusable packaging are permitted?

My box - What types of reusable packaging are permitted?

Are there any restrictions on the size or material of ‘my box’?
There are no restrictions on the choice of reusable packaging that you bring from home. As our university catering staff do not come into contact with the material, it is not relevant for us. You can simply choose which reusable containers you would like to bring according to your personal preferences.

My box & StudiwerkMainz box - Are there special incentives for using it?

My box & StudiwerkMainz box - Are there special incentives for using it?

Let's protect the environment together by bringing our ‘own box’ from home. Disposable packaging produces a lot of waste for a short period of use. In the future, disposable packaging will also become more expensive. This would also increase the price for which food is bought. You can protect the environment and save money in the long term by bringing and using your ‘own box’.

Disposable - What happens to the disposable packaging that is still available?

Disposable - What happens to the disposable packaging that is still available?

Will these continue to be offered or will they be phased out?

Disposable packaging will continue to be used. In future, they will no longer be found next to the products (e.g. bread rolls, cakes...), but at the checkout. Later, disposable packaging will no longer be free of charge. From 1 January 2025 at the latest, every single piece of disposable packaging will cost money.

Our waste management

New concept to reduce food waste
From Monday, 19 October 2024, Studierendenwerk Mainz is launching a new waste management concept: 50% discount on hot meals from 15 minutes before the counter closes. This is a first step towards reducing food waste - while stocks last, of course.

‘Bring your own tin’ perfectly complements the sale of hot food. For your evening meal, you can have a stew filled into your tin before you go home from class. This saves you having to cook or order in the evening! Not in the mood for stew? Alternatively, take the vegetable lasagne from the lunch counter on Monday 19 October before your canteen closes.

Background information
Studierendenwerk Mainz is introducing a waste management system at the start of the 2024/25 winter semester. Measures will be developed step by step to reduce food waste to a minimum. In addition to reducing food waste, optimising CO2 emissions and the resources used is also important to us. To achieve this goal, Studiwerk Mainz uses an AI-supported programme that provides helpful analysis data, and the first step in food waste management is to reduce the price of hot meals in all canteens by 50% 15 minutes before the counter closes. In this way, we want to reduce the disposal of food that is still available, at best to zero. Important: This is a sale according to the motto ‘While stocks last’.

This innovation will be introduced in all our canteens - on the JGU campus, at Mainz University of Applied Sciences and at TH Bingen.

Example
If there are 10 schnitzels, 5 portions of vegetable lasagne and 20 portions of stew left and 200 guests are queuing:

10 people receive a schnitzel
5 people receive lasagne
20 people receive a stew
The remaining 165 people go away empty-handed at the hot food counter. If you are one of them, you can choose food from the rest of our range at the normal price, which will still be sold after the counter closes. In the canteen, you can have a toast grilled or take a sandwich in your tin.

More reusable, less disposable

You have a long day ahead of you, full of lectures and seminars. During your lunch break, you go to the canteen to get something to eat. As you don't have time to eat on the spot, you take your food with you. But instead of choosing disposable packaging, you remember the Studierendenwerk Mainz initiative: ‘Bring your own tin!’

You bring your own box, fill it with your favourite food and take it with you. As you sit together with your fellow students later, you discuss the importance of sustainability and how small changes in everyday life can have a big impact. You feel good because you are actively contributing to reducing waste and enjoying delicious food at the same time. And if you forget your box, you can simply borrow one of the four different Studiwerk Mainz reusable boxes for 2 euros at the checkout of your canteen.
