Reduction of food-waste :: Elimination of packaging materials by 2026 :: Optimization of C02 emissions
Reduction of food waste
Times
50% off hot food in the last 15 minutes of the hot food service at lunchtime and in the afternoon
Simply take it home with you: For your evening meal, you can have a stew filled into your can before you go home from class. This saves you having to cook or order in the evening! Not in the mood for stew? Alternatively, you can take the vegetable lasagna from the lunch counter on Monday, 19.10 before your canteen closes.
Example
For the 50% sale 15 minutes before the hot food counter closes
If there are 10 schnitzels, 5 portions of vegetable lasagne and 20 portions of stew left and 200 guests are in the queue:
10 people receive a schnitzel
5 people receive lasagne
20 people receive stew
The remaining 165 people go away empty-handed at the hot food counter. If you are one of them, you can choose food from the rest of our range at the normal price, which will still be sold after the counter closes. In the Mensaria you could, for example, have a toast grilled or take a sandwich in your tin.
Abolition of packaging materials
Our goal
We want to be single-use packaging-free by 2026: no sandwich bags, no paper plates, no paper burger boxes. In 2026, we want to offer only reusable options.
This is how we reduce single-use packaging
“Bring your own can": We would like to encourage you and all our guests to bring your own reusable packaging to transport food and baked goods in an environmentally friendly way. This concept perfectly complements the sale of hot food to take away. In addition, we offer the rental of our Studiwerk cans for a €2 deposit at every checkout so that you can take your food with you in reusable packaging.
Tin instead of paper bag
Think about it - do you need the bag? If you eat in the canteen, take a plate or tray. If you take the pastries with you, bring your tin or borrow our Studiwerk tin for €2. Simply transport your bread roll, sandwich or croissant in the tin instead of using a paper bag at the checkout.
Tin instead of disposable to-go packaging
Use your own or a borrowed can for your pastries, your salad, your take-away food from the food truck or the Mensa-Blitz or your food saved for 50%: simply for any food you want to take with you.
Disposable packaging will be subject to a charge
From 01.01.2025, paper bags will be subject to a charge in all canteens. However, you can borrow our Studiwerk can for a €2 deposit. By the way, we are currently buying new tins that go well with our baked goods. So soon there will be 5 different tins.
Optimization of C02 emissions
The C02 emissions for each dish are marked on the menus. We have joined the Climate Plate Initiative (www.klimateller.de) and serve dishes with corresponding CO2 emissions every day. In addition, by labeling all dishes with the CO2 values, personal responsibility comes into play: everyone can adjust their eating behavior according to the CO values and eat what tastes good.
To optimize CO2 emissions, Studiwerk Mainz also uses an AI-supported program that provides helpful analysis data.
These measures are being implemented in all of our canteens - on the JGU campus, at Mainz University of Applied Sciences and at Bingen University of Applied Sciences.
