At the language café, you can communicate in a relaxed atmosphere with learners and native speakers in the language you finally want to use again, brush up on or perfect.
The special thing about it: One language is spoken at each table or in each group. You are free to choose where you want to sit or stand and which conversations you want to take part in. You can join in at your current language level without any pressure.

For active participation, we recommend at least level B1 in the language you wish to practise. If you can speak A2 and understand B1, you are also welcome. In this case, it is advisable to sit at the edge of a group and listen first.
Please note: The language café is not a language course. We assume basic knowledge and do not offer a language course. Our aim is to provide a platform for speaking, using and improving existing language skills.
How the language café works
How the language café works
When you arrive, you first write a name tag and stick on the stickers of the languages you speak. Then you simply sit down at the table that has the sign with the language you want to speak on it. And then you talk to the people sitting there who want to speak the same language. You can also change tables in one evening and speak different languages. You are free to choose which conversation you want to join in with and participate at your own language level.

The Language Café will be even better with you! We welcome all native speakers, prospective linguists and future teachers who would like to offer a table in a new language or join the Language Café team. You don't have to be perfect, don't worry! The main thing is that you can give others the opportunity to use the language you offer, to understand it better and to express themselves in it. We sometimes develop topics and conversation starters together. Incidentally, the German team gets to know most of the internationals.
The language café team meets once a month to talk to each other in peace and quiet and in between we have a lot of digital contact. We exchange ideas and support each other.
Get in touch at sprachcafe@studierendenwerk-mainz.de and let us know which language you would like to offer.

Exchange movie tips in Italian? Talk about your last vacation in French or finally find out what Korean sounds like?
At the language café, you can talk to learners and native speakers in the language you finally want to learn, brush up on or perfect. The highlight: one language is spoken at each table. There is always a professional at the table to keep the conversation going and help if things get stuck. You are free to choose which conversation you want to join and can participate at your own language level.
The number of tables and the choice of languages depends on how many volunteer language table leaders there are, but in any case there are tables for German, English, French, Italian and Spanish.
